Escalators are an integral part of modern architecture and transportation, facilitating the movement of people in various settings, from shopping malls to subway stations. This article explores the fascinating history of escalators, tracing their evolution from conceptual designs to the advanced machines we use today.

The Early Concepts: 19th Century

The idea of mechanical walkways can be traced back to the 1850s. It was during this time that the first patent for a moving staircase was filed by a man named Jesse W. Reno. In 1859, Reno demonstrated his “inclined elevator” at Coney Island, New York, providing a simple amusement ride that would set the stage for future developments.

Renos design featured a conveyor belt system similar to a modern escalator but lacked the familiar step designs we see today. The concept, although innovative, was not widely adopted until improvements were made to its design and functionality in the years to follow.
